How the estimate works

Referral revenue is a simple funnel: customers × share rate × conversion rate × average order value. The planner multiplies your monthly customer volume by the share of customers who send their link, then by the share of those links that turn into a first order. Reward cost per successful referral becomes your customer acquisition cost - the number to compare directly with what you pay ad platforms.

The estimate is deliberately conservative: it counts only the friend's first order, ignoring their repeat purchases and the referrer's increased loyalty - both of which typically make real-world referral economics better than the model.

Frequently asked questions

How many customers actually share a referral link?

When the referral prompt appears at the right moment - after a positive experience like delivery or a loyalty reward - 5-15% of customers typically share. A link buried in the account page performs far worse than one on the thank-you page or in a points-earned email.

What conversion rate should I expect from shared links?

15-30% of shared links converting to a first order is a realistic planning range, because a friend's recommendation carries built-in trust. Two-sided incentives (both the referrer and the friend get a reward) sit at the top of that range.

How does referral CAC compare to paid ads?

Referral CAC equals your total reward cost per successful referral - often $10-20. Paid social CAC for e-commerce is commonly $30-60 and rising, which is why referrals are usually a store's cheapest acquisition channel once running.

Should the referrer and the friend both get a reward?

Yes - two-sided rewards consistently outperform one-sided ones. The friend's discount lowers the barrier to a first purchase, and the referrer's points or credit give a reason to keep sharing.

When should a Shopify store launch referrals?

As soon as you have repeat customers who love the product - referrals amplify existing satisfaction rather than create it. Keystone treats refer-a-friend as a first-class reward, so many merchants launch it together with their points program.
