Option Set Order
Control the order in which option sets appear on your storefront when more than one applies to the same product.
Overview
Each option set has an optional Order value. When a product has more than one applicable option set — for example, one assigned by product and another by collection — the sets render on the storefront from top to bottom in ascending order, from the lowest Order value to the highest.
When this matters
Order only affects the storefront when a product is covered by two or more option sets at the same time. If a product has a single option set, the Order value has no visible effect — which is why the field is optional and usually left empty.
The Order Field
In the Option Set editor, the Order field sits next to the Option Set name. An info tooltip explains that it's optional and can usually be left empty.
- Optional — you can save an option set with Order left empty.
- Whole numbers only — the field accepts whole numbers of 1 or higher. Entering
0, a decimal, or a negative number shows a validation error and prevents saving until it's corrected.
Lower numbers appear first. For example, an option set with Order 1 displays above one with Order 2.
Setting the Order
- Navigate to the Option Sets page
- Open the option set you want to position
- In the Order field next to the option set name, enter a whole number (1 or higher)
- Click Save in the contextual save bar
Your changes appear on the storefront immediately — no manual cache clearing is needed.
Clearing the Order
To remove an order, clear the Order field and save. The option set returns to the default ordering.
Editing and saving an option set without changing the Order keeps the previously saved value — it isn't wiped when you save other changes.
Leaving the Order Empty
The Order field is optional. If you leave it empty:
- The option set keeps the app's existing default ordering
- Nothing changes for products where you haven't set an order
- You can set an explicit Order on just the sets you care about and leave the rest untouched
How Ordering Is Resolved
When several option sets apply to one product, they are sorted as follows:
- Sets with an Order value come first, lowest to highest
- Sets without an Order value appear after all ordered sets
- When sets share the same Order value — or none have one — they fall back to the default order: option sets assigned to specific products appear before those that apply to all products, and older sets appear before newer ones
Best Practices
- Use spaced numbers (10, 20, 30) so you can insert a set between two existing ones later without renumbering everything
- Only set an Order on products that genuinely have overlapping option sets
- After changing the Order, preview a product that has multiple sets to confirm the arrangement
Existing Option Sets
Option sets created before this feature load with an empty Order and continue to save normally. Their storefront ordering stays exactly as it was until you set an Order value.
Next Steps
- Apply Product Selection to control which products an option set covers
- Option Set Status to enable or disable a set without deleting it
